Snæfellsjökull stratovolcano is one of the most picturesque mountains in Iceland, rising up 1450 meters from the most western part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This famous volcano is clearly visible more than 100 km away. Many have written poems about its grandeur and seemingly endless shining white coat of ice and snow. Arguably, the most famous literature about Snæfellsjökull is Jules’s Vernes novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” where the entrance to the centre was through a caldera at the very top.

The hike takes 5-7 hours with average ascend time of 3-5 hours. The total elevation gain is 760 m (2,500 ft.) and the total hiking distance is 7-8 km (4,5-5 miles).

This trip truly delivers an amazing adventure along an Icelandic glacier. The drive itself offers breathtaking views surpassed by the vistas from the slopes and the peak. On clear days the whole Westfjord peninsula is visible. Snæfellsjökull is undeniably one of the best glacier hikes in the world.

Terrain: Lava field, volcanic rock, snow and glacier. A great hike to the top Iceland’s most famous glacier and volcano. The glacier has crevasses so a mountain guide and the right equipment are obligatory. The route down offers great skiing in the spring.
